Physical Education

Here at Woodlands we believe children should experience a wide range of physical activities. Each week our children work on at least one area of the physical curriculum to improve their physical literacy. Our learning takes place both indoors and outdoors and over the academic year covers Dance, Gymnastics, Athletics and Games.

Gymnastics and Dance both take place in the Hall. The children follow various themes related to their curriculum topic. Through dance and movement, they learn how to express themselves. Gymnastics involves learning how to use equipment safely and to acquire, develop and gain new skills. Games, including invasion, net and striking and fielding games, take place outside and children learn a variety of skills that are developed into small competitive matches.

In the Autumn term, Our year 5/6 children visit Barnstondale Outdoor Centre on a residential visit which provides lots of outdoor and adventurous activities including archery, climbing and den building. Our Year 3/4 children also enjoy swimming sessions at the local baths during the Spring and Summer terms.

Our links with Bebington High Sports College provides Specialist PE Teachers who work across KS1 and KS2 to provide children with high quality teaching and learning in PE together with providing staff the opportunity to see high quality PE teaching in action.

As a school we want to provide pupils with further opportunities to enjoy P.E. We offer children intra-sport competitions across a range of disciplines culminating in our annual sports days for KS1 and KS2. We also offer a variety of sporting clubs that are open to all pupils to join and present teams of pupils the opportunity to compete in inter-school competitions and games. These clubs and competitions provide pupils with valuable experiences to develop their social and moral understanding by interacting with other people.

Our Sports Apprentice further maximises physical activity at school, through establishing lunch time active play sessions, during which pupils may participate in a physically challenging activity with their friends. These activities provide pupils with a purposeful activity to participate in and enable pupils to continue to lead a healthy lifestyle.

To achieve our vision, PE looks like this:

  • Children are active for 90-95% of lessons

  • High quality equipment is used to engage and create positive attitudes

  • Individuals know what they are learning and how they can be successful

Children have time to discuss and lead their learning, solving problems together
