Phonics and Early Reading

Reading skills are developed at all stages of the school, from Reception, where early reading skills are consolidated, to Year 6 where higher order skills are built upon and extended.

Phonics is taught primarily through the Letters and Sounds scheme. We use daily systematic, synthetic phonics teaching which helps our children get to know all the phonics (sounds) ensuring that children’s early reading and writing skills develop rapidly.

Many of the books in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage One are phonically decodable, in order to support children in the early stages of learning to read. Reading books are taken from a variety of reading schemes and are 'book banded' according to their level of difficulty.

As well as reading texts as a whole class, all the children take part in Guided reading sessions, which are small group reading sessions of 20 minutes, allowing the children to explore text further, and discuss what they are reading in depth with an adult.

All children choose a home reading book, which they can read and share with an adult at home. The children will also read to their teacher individually.
